# Move your email to a new phone or computer

Add your account to the new device as IMAP. Your mail stays on the server, so nothing is lost, as long as the old device is not using POP3.

## Before you start

1. Check whether the old device uses **IMAP** or **POP3**, as shown in [IMAP or POP3](/imap-vs-pop3/).
2. If it uses **POP3**, switch it to IMAP before you retire it, so its mail is copied back to the server.

## Add the account on the new device

1. Follow the guide for your device: [iPhone and iPad](/iphone-ipad/), [Android](/android/), [Outlook](/outlook/) or [Thunderbird](/thunderbird/).
2. Choose **IMAP** (on phones it may be under **Other**), never **Exchange**.
3. Check that your folders and old emails appear.
4. Set your signature again in the new app. A signature saved in [webmail](/email-signature/) does not carry over to phone or desktop apps.

## Bring your calendar and contacts

1. Sync your calendar [on a phone](/calendar-mobile/) or [with Outlook on a computer](/calendar-outlook/).
2. Sync your contacts with [Sync your contacts with your phone](/contacts-mobile/). On a computer, [export them](/export-contacts/) and [import them](/import-contacts/).

## Retire the old device

1. Once the new device works, remove the email account from the old one.
2. Reset the old device before you give it away.

> **Caution**
> A device still trying an old password can get your connection blocked. See [Locked out after too many wrong passwords](/locked-out/) if that happens.

## Common issues

### Will I lose old emails when I set up a new phone?

Not if your old device uses IMAP, because your mail stays on the server. If it uses POP3, some mail may only be on that device, so switch it to IMAP first. See IMAP or POP3 (/imap-vs-pop3/).

### Which account type should I choose on the new device?

Choose IMAP (on phones it may be under Other), never Exchange. Office Niaga Mail does not support Exchange ActiveSync.

### My old phone keeps asking for the password after I set up the new one. What should I do?

Remove the account from the old device once the new one works, or it may keep trying an old password and get your connection blocked. See Locked out after too many wrong passwords (/locked-out/).
