# Change a user's email address (Rename)

Renaming a mailbox gives a user a new email address and login, without deleting their mail. Use it for a name change, a spelling fix, or when a role address like info@ should become sales@. It is different from editing a mailbox, which only changes the display name or the size limit.

## Rename the mailbox

1. [Log in to webmail](/log-in/) as a domain admin, then click **Domain Settings**, then **Accounts**.
2. Click the user you want to rename to open their page. **Rename** is not in the **...** menu on the list itself.

3. On the user's page, click the **...** button, then choose **Rename**.
4. Enter the new address in the dialog and save.

   

## After the rename

- The old address stops receiving mail immediately. Right away, create an [alias](/alias-mailing-list/) with the old name pointing to the renamed mailbox, so messages still sent to it are not lost.
- Every phone and computer app signed in to this mailbox must [sign in again](/new-device/) with the new address as the username. Server settings stay the same: mail.officeniaga.com, port 993 (IMAP), 995 (POP3) or 465 (SMTP).
- Colleagues in your company will see the new address in the [Global Address List](/global-address-list/) once it is saved. Tell customers and suppliers yourself, because they cannot see it there.

## Common issues

### What happens to mail sent to the old address after a rename?

It stops arriving right away. Create an alias for the old address that points to the renamed mailbox, so nothing bounces. See Create an alias or mailing list (/alias-mailing-list/).

### Do phone and computer email apps keep working after a rename?

No. Every app must sign in again using the new address as the username. See Move your email to a new phone or computer (/new-device/).

### Is this the same as changing a display name?

No. Renaming changes the email address and login itself. Changing only the display name or mailbox size uses a different screen. See Change display name and mailbox quota (/edit-mailbox/).
